Installation requirements

The Exploratory App requires Xray for Jira Server and Data Center version 8.4.0 or higher. You can use the app with Xray for Jira Cloud too.

Use the App without Jira

You can also use the Xray Exploratory App in standalone mode. No Jira and Xray is needed. 

Installing the Desktop App

Windows Installation

To install the Windows application, run the xray-exploratory-app-setup.exe installer and follow the on-screen instructions. 

 

macOS Installation

To install the macOS application, double-click the xray-exploratory-app-setup.dmg file and drag the App to the Applications shortcut.

Ubuntu Linux Installation

To install the Linux application, please follow the following steps:

  1. Install zip gzip tar
    > sudo apt-get install zip gzip tar

  2. Install Handbrake Client
    > sudo apt-get install handbrake-cli

  3. Install AppImageLauncher
    > sudo add-apt-repository ppa:appimagelauncher-team/stable
    > sudo apt update
    > sudo apt install appimagelauncher
  4. Download the latest Xray Exploratory App
  5. Double click on it and click on Integrate and run next

  6. Close the app and download the Exploratory App Assets to your Desktop
  7. Unzip it
    > tar -xvzf application-xea.tar.gz

  8. Run the following commands on the terminal:
    > sudo xdg-mime install --mode system application-xea.xml
    > sudo xdg-icon-resource install --context mimetypes --size 256 application-xea.png xea
    > sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
    > sudo update-icon-caches /usr/share/icons

  9. Restart the computer

Configure your Jira Cloud instance to be linked with the Xray Exploratory App 

  1. Create a new Application link by navigating in Jira Cloud to Jira Settings > Products > Application links
  2. Enter the URL https://www.getxray.app, then click "Create new link."
  3. Ignore the warning message that states, "No response was received from the URL you entered", and click "Continue."
  4. On the first screen of the Link applications dialog, enter "Xray Exploratory App" in the Application Name, "Generic Application" in the Application Type and make sure you select the "Create incoming link" checkbox. You should leave the other fields empty and click "Continue".
  5. On next screen of the Link applications dialog, enter the connection parameters with the fields below and click "Continue".

Setup time

Usually, the app links work immediately. But sometimes Jira Cloud can take up to 15min to fully enable the app link.

Configure your Jira Server instance to be linked with the Xray Exploratory App 

  1. Create Application link by navigating in Jira Server to Jira Administration > Applications > INTEGRATIONS > Application links
  2. Enter the URL https://www.getxray.app, then click "Create new link."

Configure Xray Exploratory App

  1. Download and install the Xray Exploratory App for MacOS and Windows 
    1. Once installed follow the on-screen instructions
  2. Insert your Jira URL, select if you are connecting to Jira Cloud or Jira Server and click Connect to Jira. After you click "Connect to Jira" your browser will open, or a new tab will be created. Please follow the instructions in your browser window.
  3. To login, enter your Jira username and password (in case you are not already logged in into your Jira instance)
  4. Tap Allow in the authorization prompt 

    Note: The Xray Exploratory App does not store your user name or password, we only use an authorization token
