# Introduction

There are two separate Xray apps: **[Xray Test Management for Jira](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211769/xray-test-management-for-jira)** and **[Xray Enterprise](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1229688/xray-enterprise)**.

In 2025, Atlassian introduced **[App Editions](https://developer.atlassian.com/platform/marketplace/listing-app-editions/)**** **for Cloud apps, enabling vendors to offer a more structured differentiation of feature sets.

To align with this framework, Xray offers:

- **[Xray Test Management for Jira](https://www.getxray.app/test-management)**** with two app editions:**
  - Standard.
  - Advanced.
- **[Xray Enterprise](https://www.getxray.app/xray-enterprise)** – an independent listing with capabilities and support tiers tailored for large-scale enterprises.
  - Xray Enterprise is available for both Cloud and DC.
  - Xray Enterprise does not offer app editions.

> ⚠️ **For DC, Xray Enterprise requires version 2.0 to work as an independent app. If you’re using an older version, contact our team for support with your commercial renewals.**

## Benefits

- **More flexibility** in choosing the offering that best suits your teams’ needs.
- **Smoother upgrade experiences**.
- **Clearer value proposition**, with each tier designed to address distinct business needs, without overwhelming users with too many options at once.

# Operations

## Installation and Usage

> ℹ️ You only have to install **one app**:
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - If you are using the Xray for Jira Test Management app, you will be placed on the Xray Standard tier by default and can upgrade/downgrade to Advanced.
> ℹ️ - Xray Enterprise no longer needs to have a paid Xray for Jira Test Management app license.

# FAQs

### 1 - Installation and Migration Scenarios

1.1 - What happens if both the Xray Test Management for Jira and Xray Enterprise apps remain installed - will there be any functional impacts?

> Technically speaking, both apps should function as if there was only Xray Enterprise installed.
>
> Users who have been utilizing gadgets with both applications installed (Xray + Xray Enterprise) prior to release 6.9.0 will need to remove, reinstall, and reconfigure their gadgets, as they will become unavailable after uninstalling one of the apps. The same applies to users who move from Enterprise to Standard/Advanced or vice versa. In these cases, the existing [gadget](https://getxraydocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/XRAYCLOUD/pages/44566250) configurations will no longer be valid and must be set up again to ensure proper functionality.
>
> Go here to know more about the [two Xray distinct apps](https://getxraydocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/XRAYCLOUD/pages/392921546).

1.2 - If a user tries to install Xray Enterprise with Xray Test Management for Jira still installed, what happens?

> Xray Test Management for Jira will become Xray Enterprise and all will work properly. The users can choose to uninstall Xray Standard before or after installing Xray Enterprise.

1.3 - If a user is migrating from DC to Cloud, can they choose to move to Cloud Standard, Advanced, or Xray Enterprise directly? How?

> The migration process from DC to Cloud has not changed. Xray Standard and Advanced are simply license configurations in Xray Cloud, so they are not part of the JCMA (Jira Cloud Migration Assistant) flow. Your data will migrate into whichever edition is active on your target instance.
>
> For Xray Enterprise DC customers, you should still select **Xray** in JCMA (not Xray Enterprise). We are working with Atlassian to make this process smoother. In the meantime, please open a support ticket with our team for additional guidance.

### 2. Upgrades, Downgrades, and Trials

2.1 - What happens if a customer tries to install Xray Enterprise with the Standard version still installed? Same with downgrade.

> **DC**: Xray Enterprise will check if Xray Test Management for Jira is installed, so no issue here. There will be a message to the user indicating they can cancel their Xray Standard subscription, but not to uninstall the application.
>
> **Cloud**: No negative functional impacts. The users should only keep one paid license, either Xray Test Management or Xray Enterprise.

2.2 - How can a customer select a different tier and downgrade/upgrade?

> Customers can upgrade and downgrade their Xray Test Management editions (Standard and Advacned) through Marketplace, in-product Marketplace, Admin Hub and Billing console. To learn how customers do this, see the *[Installing and Managing App access](https://support.atlassian.com/organization-administration/docs/installing-and-managing-app-access/)* Atlassian documentation page.

2.3 - How are app editions upgrades and downgrades scheduled?

> Upgrades take effect immediately, while downgrades are scheduled to occur at the end of the billing period. However, if a Standard paying customer is on an Advanced trial and chooses to opt out, the opt-out takes effect immediately, and the customer reverts to their Standard paid subscription without the Advanced trial.

2.4 - How does Xray handle billing cycle changes when switching app edition tiers? If customers are on a paid Standard subscription and are trialing an Advanced edition, will they be charged during the trial period?

> During the trial period, customers will continue to be charged for their existing Standard subscription. After the trial ends and they convert, they will be charged for the Advanced edition. Go [here](https://developer.atlassian.com/platform/app-plans/) to know more.

2.5 - If there’s an app edition tier change, how does it happen? Does it affect performance? What are the risks? How long does it take?

> No performance degradation is expected. Once the new license tier is enabled, it might take a while for some things to take effect due to internal caches, up to a few minutes.
> Aside from this, no data is lost or changed and there is no risk.

2.6 - What is the process for upgrading/downgrading between apps, and when can it be done?

> If you’re already an Xray customer looking to upgrade to Enterprise, a new license will have to be generated. To know more, please [contact the Xray Sales team](https://www.getxray.app/contact-us).

2.7 - What happens to Test Case Versions and Dynamic Test Plans when downgrading from Xray Enterprise?

> No data will be lost as Xray keeps it stored in the database in case the customer later upgrades. The customer will lose the functionality of Test case versions until they upgrade again.

2.8 - During an Enterprise trial, will all features and increased limits be available immediately?

> Yes.

2.9 - If an Enterprise trial expires without purchase, will there be an automated downgrade and advance notice?

> There is no downgrade. The Xray Enterprise app stops working.

2.10 - How do trials work? Can a customer get a trial per app and per edition?

> Yes.

2.11 - How long are the trials?

> Customers have a 30-day trial period. They can also extend their trials through customer advocates, similar to Standard trials. If they are satisfied with the app, they will transition to a paid edition. Additionally, customers can downgrade to the Standard edition during their trial. It's important to note that **opting out is only available for trials**. Once a customer switches to an Advanced subscription, downgrades can only occur at the end of the billing cycle and are scheduled, not immediate.

2.12 - Will there be two active licenses for a paying Standard customer on an Advanced trial?

> No. There will be a single license showing the edition as Advanced under evaluation. The transaction report will show the Standard edition as the paid version during the trial period.

2.13 - Will there be two active licenses for paying Xray Test Management and Xray Enterprise users?

> Yes. The two apps are independent and will have their own license and billing periods.

### 3. Features, Parity, and Limitations

3.1 - What are the limitations and requirements of each tier?

> There are no specific requirements. As for the limitations, they are showed in a table above, in this page.

3.2 - Will Xray Standard and Enterprise continue to offer the same features they currently do?

> Yes. This development specifically does not change any Xray Standard or Xray Enterprise feature sets.

3.3 - How often will shared features be synchronized across tiers?

> When a feature is launched, it is automatically available to all tiers that can have access to it.

3.4 - What happens to customers with Sandbox?

> A customer with the Standard edition on a production instance will be able to:
>
> - **Use the Standard edition for free on Sandbox**: customers will be able to install the Standard edition of that app and use it for free on their sandbox instance
> - **Use a paid Advanced edition on Sandbox**: customers will be able to install the Advanced edition of that app and use with a paid subscription in their sandbox instance. For example, a customer has the Standard edition of app X on their production instance, they will be able to install and use the Advanced edition in the Sandbox instance, but they will have to pay for the full subscription based on the number of users (along with the currently running Standard edition subscription in Production).
>
> A customer with Advanced edition on a Production instance will be able to:
>
> - **Use the Standard edition for free**: customers will be able to install the Standard edition of that app and use it for free on their Sandbox instance.
> - **Use the Advanced edition for free**: customers will be able to install the Advanced edition of that app and use it for free on their Sandbox instance.

3.5 - In Xray Data Center, do users need to install more than one app?

> No. Users only need to install the **[Xray Enterprise app](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1229688/xray-enterprise)****. The ****[Xray Test Management for Jira](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211769/xray-test-management-for-jira)**** app **will be installed automatically “behind the scenes” and will not require a license.
>
> The only potential issue occurs if the Xray Test Management for Jira is manually uninstalled because users think they don’t need it. In that case, Xray will display a message prompting them to reinstall the Xray for Jira Test Management app, including a direct link to the app so they can easily request their Jira administrator to install it again.

### 4. Pricing

4.1 - What are the pricing/features differences between tiers?

> See the links to each Xray app:
>
> - Standard and Advanced ([Xray Test Management for Jira](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211769/xray-test-management-for-jira)).
> - Enterprise ([Xray Enterprise](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1229688/xray-enterprise)).
>
> Go [here](https://getxraydocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/XRAYCLOUD/pages/392921546) to learn all about the two Xray apps and the three tiers.

### 5. Data Management and Compliance

5.1 - How will Data Residency work?

> [Data Residency](https://getxraydocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/XRAYCLOUD/pages/44565771) works for the Xray Enterprise app the same way it works for the Xray Test Management for Jira app.

5.2 - In Cloud, will the Enterprise app support all Data Residency regions at launch?

> All the Xray licenses operate in the same regions.
>
> The Data Residency will work the same. Please see more [here](https://getxraydocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/XRAYCLOUD/pages/44565771).

5.3 - If a user downgrades from Enterprise to Standard, what happens to Enterprise-only data (e.g., Dynamic Test Plans, Test Case Versions, AI-generated Tests) ?

> It depends on the feature. But, as a rule of thumb, the user will be able to view all the created data, but not generate new data (if that feature is only present as an Enterprise feature).

5.4 - While trialing Enterprise with unlimited storage, what happens to artifacts if a user downgrades to Standard?

> If when downgrading for some reason, if the customer is over the limit in terms of [storage](https://getxraydocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/XRAYCLOUD/pages/44565773), they will not be able to add new files into storage until they are below the new limit. But all the files will still be there.

5.5 - Will the same database be maintained when moving between tiers? If not, will customers go through a migration process?

> The database is the same exact one across all licenses.
