### January 19, 2026

The Xray team is pleased to announce the rollout of a new release for [Xray Cloud](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211769/xray-test-management-for-jira) and [Xray Enterprise](https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1229688/xray-enterprise-test-management-for-jira?hosting=cloud&tab=overview), which introduces [event-based JQLs](https://getxraydocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/XRAYCLOUD/pages/44565225) (Figure 1) for greater control over data freshness and query behavior.

# Release Highlights

## Event-Based JQLs in Xray Cloud

Xray Cloud now offers **event-based JQLs**, giving administrators explicit control over how query results are computed, prioritizing either near real-time freshness (Figure 1).

### What’s New

![Figure 1 - Xray JQL expression](media://e58de3d4-bfce-43b7-8b2d-4569d3561996)

JQL functions are now available as:

- **Event-based JQLs (near real-time)**
  - Four predefined, event-driven JQL expressions:
    - testsWithoutTestExecution
    - defectsCreatedDuringTestExecution
    - testSetTests
    - testPlanTestExecutions
  - Results update almost instantly as data changes.
- **Cache-based JQLs (DC parity) - Beta**

> 📝 Cache based JQL functions (similar to Data Center JQL) are currently part of a closed **[Beta](https://getxraydocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/XRAYCLOUD/pages/44565225/Enhanced+Querying+with+JQL#Limitations)**** **program and are not generally available. If you are interested in participating in this program, please submit your **[access request here](https://www.getxray.app/lp/xray-jqlfunction-request)****.** Our team will review and provide further guidance.

### How it Works

- Xray administrators need to turn on JQL Custom functions on the [Xray Features screen](https://getxraydocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/XRAYCLOUD/pages/44565845).
- Configuration is available under: *Xray Settings* → *Admin* → *Features*.
- The selected mode applies consistently across the entire Xray instance.

> ℹ️ Event-based JQLs are optimal for responsiveness and data freshness, with a limited set of supported expressions. Find more details [here](https://getxraydocs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/XRAYCLOUD/pages/44565225).
